Exploring Application Deployment on Edge Solutions: A Focus on Mobile Edge Computing, Akraino Eliot, EdgeX, and OpenVINO for Healthcare Applications

The burgeoning demand for low-latency and high-bandwidth services in 5G and 6G networks underscores the critical need for efficient edge application deployment in the healthcare sector. In this investigation, we meticulously explore the intricacies of deploying edge applications, employing the Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) standards provided by ETSI, EdgeX, Akraino ELIOT Blueprint, and OpenVINO from Intel. Our focus extends to evaluating the delay associated with each deployment approach. Notably, our experiments reveal that OpenVINO stands out by achieving an exceptionally low delay of just 5 ms. This remarkable result underscores the superior real-time processing capabilities of OpenVINO for edge computing scenarios. The insights gained from this experiment not only provide a nuanced understanding of the strengths and limitations of various edge deployment solutions but also highlight the tangible benefits of choosing OpenVINO for minimizing latency and optimizing user experiences in 5G and 6G networks. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
