Voltage and Reactive Power Control Approach to Address Over-Voltage Issues in High PV Penetration Networks

الخلاصة

High energy penetration through photovoltaic (PV) panels poses a significant challenge due to over-voltage problems. This article presents a new approach for controlling the rise of voltage in low voltage Micro-grids (LVMg) with relatively high PV penetration (HPVP) named voltage/reactive power control (VRPC). The control is set via an inverter that uses the point of common coupling (PCC) voltage and returns it to its reference voltage via controlling of reactive power. Furthermore, the network in which the proposed method is considered have a high X/R ratio to emulate the LVMg. The proposed approach was implemented using MATLAB/Simulink environment and OpenDSS co-simulation. The simulations demonstrated that the VRPC/BESS technique has proven effective and robust in regulating voltage under HPVP operating conditions at various levels, where the rate of voltage rise was reduced by 5.6776% during 90% of HPVP. The proposed method can be considered fully robust and ready for widespread implementation. © 2024 by the Mohammed Kdair Abd, Rasool M. Imran, Layth F. Kamal, Farhad E. Mahmood and Firas M. F.
